North Carolina's contentious restrictions on public mask-wearing are now law after Senate Republicans voted to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's veto

  • By MAKIYA SEMINERA - Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's contentious restrictions on public mask-wearing became law on Thursday after GOP lawmakers successfully overrode a veto by the state's Democratic governor.

The Senate gave its final stamp of approval in a 30-13 override vote along party lines. The state House initiated the process Wednesday when it voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto during a lengthy session that lasted well into the night.

UN group demands release of ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan; says his detention violates international law

  • By MUNIR AHMED - Associated Press

A U.N. human rights working group has called for an immediate release of Pakistan’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying his detention is arbitrary and violates international laws. The Geneva-based United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention made the demand on Monday in an opinion after examining his case. Khan has been facing multiple prison sentences since 2022 when he was ousted from power through a vote of no-confidence in the parliament. There was no immediate comment from the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who replaced Khan after his ouster. Khan has been held in prison since August 2023 after his conviction in a graft case.

A media 'nervous breakdown'? Calls for Biden's withdrawal produce some extraordinary moments

  • By DAVID BAUDER - AP Media Writer

President Biden's performance in last week's debate with Donald Trump led to some extraordinary media moments. They included editorial calls from The New York Times and Atlanta Journal-Constitution for the president to abandon his race for reelection. Nowhere was the fallout more raw than on MSNBC's “Morning Joe,” often Biden's most fervent supporters, where host Joe Scarborough called for Biden to consider stepping away while his co-host, and wife, Mika Brzezinski, rejected this. With Scarborough off on vacation as this week began, his wife had the floor — and opened the MSNBC show with a fervent 15-minute essay calling for Biden to stay in the race.

Turkey mediates between Somalia and Ethiopia to ease diplomatic tensions

  • AP

Turkey says it has mediated talks between Somalia and Ethiopia to ease diplomatic tensions between the east African neighbors. Turkey's Foreign Ministry says that the Ethiopian and Somalian foreign ministers were “able to separately have a candid, cordial and forward-looking exchange” on Monday concerning their differences. A second round of discussions is planned in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Sept. 2. Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with the breakaway region of Somaliland in January, which Somalia denounced as infringing upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The memorandum was to allow Ethiopia’s access to the sea through Somaliland and in return Ethiopia would recognize Somaliland as an independent country.

Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden loses bid for state high court reconsideration in NFL emails lawsuit

  • By KEN RITTER - Associated Press

Former NFL coach Jon Gruden has lost a bid for the Nevada Supreme Court to reconsider whether a contract interference and conspiracy lawsuit he filed against the league after he resigned from the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 should be heard in courts or in private arbitration. Notice was posted Monday on a court website, but the written ruling wasn't immediately available online. Attorneys for Gruden, the league and an NFL spokesman didn't respond to messages about the ruling. Gruden’s lawyers sought a rehearing after a three-justice panel split in a May decision that said the league can force the civil case out of state court and into arbitration that might be overseen by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The NHL has reinstated executives Stan Bowman and Al MacIsaac and coach Joel Quenneville. They are able to seek employment around the league effective immediately. Federal judge halts Mississippi law requiring age verification for websites

  • By EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS - Associated Press

A federal judge has blocked a Mississippi law that would require users of websites and other digital services to verify their age. The order came Monday as the law was set to take effect. A tech industry group sued Mississippi on June 7, arguing the law would unconstitutionally limit access to online speech for minors and adults. Legislators said they were trying to protect children from sexually explicit material. U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden says while he recognizes the seriousness of the issue the state was trying to address, the Supreme Court has ruled laws dealing with speech are subject to strict scrutiny.

Young Thug's trial on hold as defense tries to get judge removed from case

  • By KATE BRUMBACK - Associated Press

The judge overseeing the racketeering and gang prosecution against Young Thug has put the long-running trial on hold until another judge rules on requests that he step aside from the case. Lawyers for the rapper and several other defendants had filed motions seeking the recusal of Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville. The filing is due to a meeting the judge held with prosecutors and a prosecution witness at which defendants and defense attorneys were not present. They said the meeting was “improper” and said the judge and prosecutors tried to pressure the witness, who had been granted immunity, into giving testimony.

What to know about the plea deal offered Boeing in connection with 2 plane crashes

  • By DAVID KOENIG - AP Airlines Writer

Federal prosecutors and victims’ families are waiting for Boeing to decide whether to accept a plea deal that would settle a criminal fraud charge. The charge is based on the aerospace giant misleading regulators who approved the 737 Max jetliner before two of the planes crashed late 2018 and early 2019. Relatives of some of the 346 people who died in the crashes are furious about the plea offer, which Justice Department prosecutors spelled out in an online meeting with the families and their lawyers on Sunday. The families want to put Boeing on trial. Some of the lawyers involved in the case, however, say a plea deal is better than nothing.

How the hot water that fueled Hurricane Beryl foretells a scary storm season

  • By SETH BORENSTEIN - AP Science Writer

Hurricane Beryl’s explosive growth into an unprecedented early storm shows the literal hot water the Atlantic and Caribbean are in right now and the kind of season they can expect. Beryl smashed storm records even before its major hurricane level winds approached land. The powerful storm is acting more like the monsters that form at the peak of the busiest hurricane seasons on record — 1933 and 2005. And experts say that's mostly due to water temperatures as hot or hotter than the region normally gets in September.

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey says President Joe Biden is able to run a strong race and serve a second term in the Oval Office. Casey on Monday stood by his close ally in the critical battleground state following a disastrous debate performance. Casey has stayed quiet about Biden’s performance before making his first public appearances since Thursday night’s debate. Casey acknowledges that Biden had a bad debate, but says voters are more concerned about issues like abortion, labor and voting rights and the fate of democracy. Casey, who is also seeking reelection, wouldn't elaborate on why he thinks Biden is fit. Casey’s opponent, Republican David McCormick, accuses Casey of lying about Biden’s fitness.

How to keep guns off Bourbon Street? Designate a police station as a school

  • By KEVIN McGILL - Associated Press

New Orleans officials say they will designate a police station in the city's historic French Quarter as a vocational-technical school where officers receive training. The designation means carrying handguns will be forbidden within a 1,000-foot radius of the station — an area that includes much of bar-lined Bourbon Street and other areas known for drawing big crowds of tourists and locals. The move comes as a new law takes effect that does away with permit requirements for carrying concealed firearms. City officials had tried and failed to get lawmakers to exempt all or parts of New Orleans from that law.

Thompson is sixth on the NBA’s all-time 3-pointers made list with 2,481.

José Raúl Mulino sworn in as Panama's new president, promises to stop migration through Darien Gap

  • By JUAN ZAMORANO - Associated Press

José Raúl Mulino has been sworn in as Panama’s next president, facing pressure to slow migration through the Darien Gap that connects his country with Colombia. The 65-year-old former security minister has promised to shut down migration through the jungle-clad and largely lawless border. More than half a million people traversed the corridor last year and more than 190,000 people have crossed so far in 2024, with most of the migrants hailing from Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and China. Last week on a visit to the Darien, Mulino announced he would seek an agreement with the United States government to aid in deporting migrants who crossed into Panama.

Under the Boardwalk officials vow to address homelessness in Atlantic City

  • By WAYNE PARRY - Associated Press

Atlantic City is making an effort to address its homeless population, offering help even while vowing to crack down on people sleeping outdoors on public property. In the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling enabling municipalities to ban homeless encampments, Atlantic City plans to enact an ordinance banning sleeping on public property. It could take effect in September. City outreach teams offer social services, drug or alcohol rehab, and a temporary place to stay. But many refuse the offers. Officials say that out of 200 homeless people they encountered since September, only five accepted an offer of transportation back to where they came from.
