WHAT’S IN SEASON IN JULY?

  • Fruits: All the berries are in season this month, including lesser known varieties like boysenberries and loganberries, and they are all wonderful additions to cobblers, jams and even barbecue sauces. Melons, apricots and cherries are also great choices in July. And don’t forget about peaches! Their season is short, so be ready to use them in all of your sweet and savory dishes.
  • Vegetables: It’s summer squash season, which means zucchini galore. It’s great in baked goods, and perfect for grilling. Tomatoes, cucumbers and corn are also great veggies to incorporate into summer salads and salsas this month.

It’s summer! Time for outdoor grilling, frozen treats, cool pasta salads and no-bake desserts. And with so much in-season produce available right now, it’s easy to incorporate fresh food into every meal.

My favorite thing about summer produce is all of the beautiful berries. They are wonderful in baked goods (if you can stand to turn on the oven), salads and refreshing no-bake desserts. Plus, berries are great additions to any July 4th celebration.

Tomatoes, corn and cucumbers are abundant right now, and perfect for fresh salsas, and salads. I love a fresh slice of tomato on a grilled burger. And I think I could eat Greek salad every day during the summer!

Whatever you have planned this month, you’ll find plenty of beautiful dishes in this collection that incorporate in-season foods. Here are some of the most popular fruits and vegetables that are in season during the month of July.

WHY COOK WITH WHAT’S IN SEASON?

  • Seasonal food is fresher and more nutritious than out-of-season food. Fruits and vegetables start losing nutrients the moment they’re picked, so the quicker food reaches the table, the more nutritious it will be.
  • You’ll save money using in-season foods. Especially if you grow your own fruits andvegetables. And locally grown produce doesn’t have to travel far to reach you–those savings are passed on to you!
  • You’re likely to try new ingredients, and a wider variety of fruits and vegetables, if you are focused on cooking and baking with what’s in season.
  • You’ll rely less on global, industrial agriculture, which is better for the environment.
  • Fresh, locally grown (if possible) in-season produce just tastes better! If you’re lucky enough to have year round farmer’s markets where you live, that’s the best place to find delicious seasonal produce. Plus it helps support the local economy and farmers.
