How do I know which fuse is blown in my fuse box? ›

Look for the glass containers that hold the fuses. Inspect these containers thoroughly, checking for visible signs of damage. If it looks broken or cracked, it is likely blown. Additionally, some blown fuses have metallic residue running throughout the glass container.

Engine fuse boxes are typically situated near the battery. In this vehicle, the battery is on the driver's side, and there is a fuse box right above it with a black plastic cover to protect the fuses. On the passenger side, there is also a battery, and the fuse box is located nearby.

To determine the type of blade fuses your vehicle uses, check your owner's manual for a fuse box diagram. A fuse box diagram will show you what kind of fuse goes into each slot and the exact amperage to use. If you are unable to locate a fuse box diagram, consult with your local auto mechanic.

Testing Switch Pin Continuity

The switch pins on a Normally Open (NO) circuit should have no continuity when not energized. Use a multimeter on the ohms setting to measure resistance between the switch pins. Any resistance indicates the pins are stuck closed, signaling a faulty relay.

The main fuse box is typically located under the hood, while secondary fuse panels might be inside the car, often near the dashboard or steering wheel. The fuse's wire conductor breaks when the current exceeds the ampere limit, which manufacturers usually define along with different color codes on each fuse.

The best place to install a fuse in a grounded power system is on the ungrounded conductor path to the load. That way, when the fuse blows there will only be the grounded (safe) conductor still connected to the load, making it safer for people to be around.

Place the meter leads on either side of the fuse. If there is little to no voltage indicated, the fuse is good. However, if there's a difference in voltage (typically the full supply voltage), then the fuse is bad.

Open the breaker box door. Find the breaker that has tripped by looking for one that is out of alignment with the rest (some models will be labeled “off” or “on” to indicate the position).
